An Analysis of Announcement Text Elements Affecting Students’ Reading Ability at Second Grade Natural Science Of SMA N 1 Bonjol.
Abstrak
Reading is a process to get knowledge, information, and the ideas. According to Stephenson & Harold (2009), reading is a part of the way we use language in daily life to gather information, communicate with others, and also for enjoyment. In senior high school, there are some of texts that should be studied. One of them is functional text. According to Dewisudjia (2011), short functional text is a short text that contains of command, instruction, something that should be done or should not be done in the form of prohibition, invitation, greeting card, short message, shopping list, notice, announcement, and many others. Relating to this, the researcher conducted this study on purpose of describing announcement text elements affecting students’ reading ability.
The population of this research was the second grade natural science of SMA N 1 Bonjol. The number of sample was 92 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The data of this research were gathered by reading test in the form of multiple choice items. Before the researcher gave the real test, she tried it out since the instrument was categorized as non standardized test. The result of the try out test was used to know the reliability of the test. It was found that the reliability of the test was high (0.70).
The result of this research shown that in general, the students’ reading ability in announcement text elements was low. It was indicated by the fact that 54 students (58.7%) had low ability in comprehending the text. Specifically, the students’ ability in comprehending the opening of announcement text was low. It was indicated by the fact that 47 students (51.1 %) had low ability. The students’ ability in understanding the content of announcement text was low. It was indicated by the fact that 69 students (75 %) had low ability. The students’ ability in understanding the closing of announcement text was high. It was indicated by the fact that 57 students (62 %) had high ability. It means that, the students have not understood yet in opening and content of announcement text elements.
From the finding of this study as discussed above, it can be concluded that the students will get high ability, if they have knowledge to get the information about the text. Dealing with such conclusion, it suggested to the English teachers to explain more and give exercises in reading comprehension of text.
