The Utilizing of Venn Diagrams To Develop The First Year Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang.

Abstrak

Harris (1996:9) states that vocabulary and grammar are two very important elements shared by all four skills.Teaching vocabulary for senior high school students need a good strategy for stimulate students curiosity in learning vocabulary and want to learn more about vocabulary.In this case, the researcherbelieves that Venn Diagram is a very good method to be applied in teaching vocabulary. It is based on Teaching vocabulary to English Language Learners (2012)that published by Teachers College Press which declared that it is one of the most effective teaching strategies for vocabulary developmentThe research was aimed to know the utilizing of Venn Diagram to develop the first year students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang.

This study was conducted to the first year students at SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang. Method of this research was Experimental Design which used quantitative study by taking 46 students as the sample out of 151 students of population. The sample was divided into two classes; 23 students for experimental class and 23 students dor control class. Before giving treatment, the researcher gave pre-test. Then the researcher taught the experiment class by using Venn Diagram and control class by using conventional media. Then the researcher gave post-test.In this study, researcher used test, questionaire and observation as collecting data. The researcher used vocabulary test which was multiple choice form that consist of 30 items which have been try-out, and the reliability of the test was 0.72.

Findings of this research show that teaching vocabulary by using Venn Diagram was effective. It is proved by findings the hypotesis by N-Gain have  0,35 and  0,17. So, ˃  follows 0,35 ˃ 0,17. In conclusion,  was rejected and  was accepted. It means that students’ vocabulary mastery that was taught by using Venn Diagram was higher than those taught by using conventional media. The result of the research showed that there was a significant different achievement of students’ vocabulary mastery taught by using Venn Diagram.

Dealing with conclusion, the researcher suggested the English teacher may consider to use Venn Diagram in teaching vocabulary.
