Bachelor Thesis "Code Switching of The Speech of Indonesian Language and Literature Education Students in Communicating in The Area of Universitas Bung Hatta"
Abstrak
Language can be used as a means of conversation between speakers and audiences in student’s circle formally and informally. Language as an important role in human life, and with the existence of language, community can use it as a communication tool to make it easier to work together and adapt to the environment. The problem of using language is not just bilingual, but the problem of code-switching is also found when communicating. Code-switching not only occur between languages, but it can also occur between various types or styles contained in a language.
This research aims to describe: (1) the type of code-switching, (2) the function of code-switching and (3) the causes of code-switching of the speech uttered by Indonesian Language and Literature Education students in communicating in the area of Universitas Bung Hatta. The theory used is about code-switching according to (Chaer, 2014:107).
This research used qualitative approach and used descriptive methods. The sources of data in this research were Indonesian Language and Literature Education students in communicating in the area of Universitas Bung Hataa. While, the object of this research was the code-switching of the speech of Indonesian Language and Literature Education students in communicating in the area of Universitas Bung Hatta. The data collection was carried out by implementing direct observation technique and recording by observing the utterances conducted by Indonesian Language and Literature Education students in communicating. Recording technique was used to record speeches uttered by Indonesian Language and Literature Education students in communicating in the area of Universitas Bung Hatta. The steps carried out in analyzing the data are as follows: (1) transcribing the recordings into written language, (2) analyzing the utterances of Indonesian Language and Literature Education students by conducting code-switching as well as by looking at the type, the function, and the cause of code-switching, (3) grouping the code-switching data in written form, (4) concluding the analysis of the data obtained, the format was filled after retrieving the data and discussing the results of data analysis obtained, and (5) inserting the code-switching data into the table.
Based on data analysis, it can be concluded that (1) there were 16 data for the type of internal code-switching which used its own language from Indonesian to the local language and vice versa and there was 1 datum for external code-switching which used foreign language to Indonesian and vice versa (2) there were 17 data for code-switching function found which specialized the intended person in communicating, and (3) there were 12 data for the cause of code-switching found that Indonesian Language and Literature Education students were more deeply involved in code-switching because of the changing situation with the presence of the third person.
