The Main Character’s Inner Conflict on Naning Pranoto’sSekuntum Ruh dalam Merah

Abstrak

This study aims to describe (1) the inner conflicts in Naning Pranoto’s Sekuntum Ruh dalam Merah, and (2) the causes of inner conflict on Naning Pranoto’s Sekuntum Ruh dalam Merah. The theory used in this study is the theory about kinds of inner conflict stated by Muis (2009). And the cause of inner conflict according to Wiramihardja (2007).

This is a qualitative study with descriptive method. The data is taken from Naning Pranoto’s Sekuntum Ruh dalam Merah with its focus on Anne Mary’s character inner conflict. The technique uses in collecting the data are by reading, and understanding, pin point the sentences and the quotations on the novel based on the inner character’s inner conflict, inventorying the data on the novel, classifying the data on NaningPranoto’sSekuntumRuhdalamMerah.

The results of this study show that there are six kinds of inner conflict exist within the main character on Naning Pranoto’s Sekuntum Ruh dalam Merah there are (1) depression, Anne Mary feeling depressed because she believes that she is not complete, within her soul is sour and emptiness. (2) guilt, guilt that shows by Anne Mary is the guilt experienced by Anne Mary.

Anne Mary feeling guilty towards her father’s dead. (3) not able, the conflict shows by Anne Mary is the inability of Anne Mary living her life. (4) frustration, the frustration shows by Anne Mary is by release her anxiety through drinking (get drunk). (5) angry, anger conflict shows by Anne Mary is she is low temper and easily offended or feeling indignant towards her surrounding which often look down Anne Mary. And (6) resentment, resentment shows by Anne Mary is by her doing of not liking the other people have a good body and better life than her.

Based on this study, it can be concluded that the cause of inner conflicts in Naning Pranoto’s Sekuntum Ruh dalam Merah are: (1) the actual cause, the feeling of insecurity Anne Mary has because she does not have good body like the other women and (2) cause of reinforcement, the reinforcement cause happens to Anne Mary because Anne Mary often got excessive attention, so it causes the inner conflict within herself.
