Abstrak

This research was based on the background of the daily math test scores of class IX students of SMP Negeri 5 Pariaman in the year 2018/2019 where there were still many under the KKM , and the amountstudents have difficulty in solving math problems . For this reason, it is necessary to analyze the difficulties experienced by students in terms of cognitive style, and describe the factors that cause students to experience these difficulties.

This type of research is descriptive research and uses qualitative research methods. The study population was all IX grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Pariaman. sampling using purposive sampling technique and selected class IX.4 as the study sample. The research instruments were diagnostic tests and interviews.

Based on the analysis of the data shows that: 1) students who experience difficulty concept 37.04% , principle18.52%, algorithm 63%. In general, the difficulties experienced by students based on field independent cognitive style (FI) and field dependent (FD) in solving the problem are relatively the same . 2) Factors that cause Students with cognitive field dependent (FD) and field independent (FI) difficultiesare more influenced by internal factors (from within).

From the results of the study, it is suggested that teachers in teaching also look at the aspects of students 'cognitive style and focus more on students' understanding of the material, then pay attention to the prerequisite material that students must master before explaining new material. In addition, the teacher should conduct an analysis of the difficulties students often experience in solving problems so that they can determine the right steps to overcome these difficulties.
