Abstrak

This research is motivated by the eighth grade students at SMPN 5 Padang that they have good skills and knowledge, but have not been able to use them properly. This can be seen from the results of problem solving from the assignments and quizzes given, that students were still not able to express their ideas. In the process of completion, there were students who have not been able to solve problems about students' problem solving skills in solving story problems. And students had difficulty making mathematical models of story problems.

This type of research was descriptive research using qualitative research methods. The study population was all students of class VIII6 at SMP 5 Padang. The sampling was based on purposive sampling technique with the sample class was class VIII6. The research instruments were written tests and interview guidelines.

The results of the study showed that students with high mathematical problem solving abilities were 16.67%. Students with moderate mathematical problem solving abilities were 66.66%. And students with low mathematical problem solving abilities were 16.67% .

In connection with the results of the analysis obtained, the researcher gave an advice, the teacher should provide understanding or direction to students to make a completion plan before seeking a solution to solve or reexamine the solution obtained, so that if there is an error in solving the problem, students can fix it. So that the process of solving problems about story problems can be directed properly, and the students' ability to solve math problems is better.
