An Analysis of the Grammatical Errors in Writing Recount Text Made by the Second Year Students of English Department of Bung Hatta University.

Abstrak

Writing has many contexts of life especially at school because the students would express their ideas through writing. It can be a way to make communication. According to Silalahi (2014:152), writing is a medium of communication that represents language through the inscription of signs and symbols. There is one message delivered whenever someone is writing. The message can only be understandable if the writing comprises vocabulary, grammar and semantic. If we talk about writing, grammar is an important thing because we cannot do a good writing without mastering good grammar.

Population of this research was the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University in academic 2017/2018.Total population number were 23 students; they were selected as sample using total sampling technique. The instrument used to get the data was writing recount text test. The students were asked to write a recount text. It was found that the reliability index of the test was very high (.96) (see Appendix 6). it means that test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity.

The result of the data analysis showed the grammatical errors in writing recount text made by the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. It was proved by the fact that there were 2 students (8.81% ) who make errors in omission, 2 students (8.7%) make omission of plurality, 3 students (13.4%) make Omission of be, 1 student (4.34%) makeomission of Article. 3 students (10.88%) who make errors in addition, 5 students (21.8%) make Addition of article, 5 students (21.8%) makeaddition of be before verb, 3 students (13.4%) make addition of preposition, 1 student (4.34%)makeaddition plural form, 2 students (8.7%) make addition of verb form.13 students (56.53%) who make errors in misformation, 16 students (69.6%) makemisformation of verb,8 students (34.8%) makemisformation of article, 15 students (65.21%) make misformation of be. 2 students (8.7%) who make errors in misordering, 2 students (8.7%) makemisordering of adjective, 2 students (8.7%) misordering of plural form (see Appendix 11).

Based on the findings, it could be concluded that some second years students of English Department of Bung Hatta University made grammatical errors in writing recount text. They made errors in omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Dealing with such conclusion, it is suggested tothe lecturers to give further explanation about the use of verb form, the use of articles, and the use of be form. They also can give more exercises to the students.
