Abstrak
Speaking is the most important skill because it is one of the abilities that is needed to perform a conversation. English speaking is not an easy task because speakers should know many significant components like pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension (Leong & Ahmadi : 2017;35). One of the English speaking is presentation. Oral presentations are becoming an important part of language teaching, especially in the university environment. Teaching students to design effective oral presentations presupposes two goals, namely, enabling students to function successfully in the future professional surrounding, and preparing them for their possible further academic career (Zivkovic : 2014;1). Relating to this, the researcher conducted this research on purpose of determining and describing an analysis of the students’ speaking ability in doing presentation.
The population of this research was the second year students’ at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of sample was 23 students selected by total sampling technique. The data of this research was the students’ scores on their presentation. The researcher gave some alternative topics to the students and they were asked to choose one. The researcher used inter rater technique by using two scorers to get reliability of the presentation. It was found the reliability index was 0.73. It means that the test was reliable.
The result of the data analysis, the ability the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in general was very high. It can be proved by there were 86.96% students classified having very high ability in doing presentation,39.13% students classified having high ability in expressing content, 34.78% students had high ability in using grammar, 100% students had very high ability in using vocabulary, 100% students had very high ability in pronunciation, and 100% students as having very high ability in fluency. Although the students as having high abilityof five components of speaking, but some students still have problem when they presented their presentation in front of the class.
Based on the finding that students’ speaking ability in doing presentation was very high. Since the result of the students ability in doing presentation was very high, the lecturer is suggested to give projects that are more challenging for their students in doing presentation to make them always maintain their ability.
