An Analysis of the Second Year Students’ Ability in Writing Compound Sentences Using Correlative Conjunctions at EnglishDepartment of Bung Hatta University
Abstrak
The purpose of this research was to find out the second year students’ ability in writing compound sentences using correlative conjunctions at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total sample members were 23 students, and they were chosen by using total sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test. The reliability index of the test was .98. It means that the test was reliable.
The result of this research showed that the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University in general had very good ability in writing compound sentences using correlative conjunctions. It was proved that 9 (39%) students had very good ability, 5(22%) students had good ability, 4 (17%) students had satisfactory ability and 5 (22%) students had bad ability in writing compound sentences using correlative conjunctions. Specifically, 43% students had very good ability in writing compound sentences using correlative conjunctions with both-and. There were 43% students who had very good ability in using not only-but also, and there were 35% students who had good ability in using either-or, and there were 39% students who had good ability in using neither-nor.
Based on the research findings the researcher suggests to the students to do more exercises in writing compound sentences using correlative conjunctions. They also should learn more about how to write compound sentences using correlative conjunctions to improve their ability and their knowledge about compound sentence and they also should focus on the lecturers teaching. For the lecturers, the researcher suggested to give the students motivation and find the strategies to make students more interested and be easier to understand about compound sentence using correlative conjunctions.
