Abstrak

One cause of low mastery learning math students is the lack of mathematical problem solving ability of students and focused on teacher centered. To overcome this problem, efforts are implementing cooperative learning model Think Pair Square, which provide an opportunity for students to discuss their  ideasin mathematical problem solving. The research aims to determine how student’s mathematical problem solving ability at grade VIII SMP Pertiwi 1 Padang academic year 2012/2013 after the applied model of Cooperative Learning type Think Pair Square and using conventional learning and to know mathematical problem solving ability of whether the proportion of students who achieve mastery learning mathematics by using a model of Cooperative Learning Type Think Pair Square  is higher than the proportion of students who achieve mastery learning mathematics using conventional learning. Mathematical problem solving ability of students in each indicator problem solving, visible differences in mathematical problem solving skills where students applied the model of Cooperative Learning type Think Pair Square has increased better than using the conventional learning. Hypothesis testing using   χ 2 formula two independent samples obtained χ2 = 6,67 then p = 0,004865 . Therefore p < 0,05 means  accepted. The conclution is proportion of problem solving ability of students who achieve mastery learning mathematics using model of Cooperative Learning type Think Pair Square is higher than the proportion of students who achieve mastery learning math by using conventional learning.
