Abstract
This research was stimulated by the background of students’ weakness in reading poem at the class VII 5 SMPN 1 Sutera of South Pesisir Regency particularly in applying the true intonation, rhythm and mimicry gesture. This type of research qualitative research by using descriptive method. The aim of this research was to analyze the students’ ability in reading a poem, and to describe how the student read a poem provided with true (a) intonation, (b) rhythm, (c) mimic to the students at the class VII 5 SMPN 1 Sutera of South Pesisir Regency. The object of this research was the entire of students at the class VII 5 SMPN 1 Sutera of South Pesisir Regency totally 29 people. This research used theory of Tri Priyatni Enda about the reading of art refers to the regulation of critical literature. Based on the data analysis was found the result of research showed: (1) the ability of student in reading a poem at class VII 5 SMPN 1 Sutera in applying the intonation has not been reached the minimal passing grade, was 70 (2) the ability of student in reading a poem at class VII 5 SMPN 1 Sutera in applying the rhythm has not been reached the minimal passing grade, was 67,9, (3) the ability of student in reading a poem at class VII 5 SMPN 1 Sutera in applying the mimic had been passed the minimal passing grade, was 89,7 . (4) Overall the students’ ability in reading a poem at the class VII 5 SMPN 1 Sutera of South Pesisir Regency had already beyond the established minimal passing grade, was the average score of 76.
