AN ANALYSIS OF THE FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN TRANSLATING A POLITICAL NEWS OF THE JAKARTA POST FROM ENGLISH INTO INDONESIAN AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

INTRODUCTION Language is used for communication in our daily lives. In this world, there are many languages that we know; one of them is English. English is used in speaking all over the world [1]. In Indonesia, English is a foreign language that is studied at schools, while for our daily activities we just use Indonesian language or mother tongue. In learning English, there are four skills that we should know. The first skill is listening, the second skill is speaking, the third skill is reading, and the last skill is writing. English has language components; they are grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In learning English there is another important thing that is translation. Translation is the process of transferring a written text from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL), conducted by a translator, or translators, in a specific socio-cultural context [2]. Translation is a process of changing SL into TL [3]. According to the researcher’s experience in studying English-Indonesian Translation, translating a news text was a little difficult because the use of language in news text is different from other texts. The researcher also found a difficult word that the researcher had not found before. Because of those difficulties, the researcher wanted to analyze the fourth year students’ ability in translating news text from English into Indonesian. METHOD To do this research, the researcher used descriptive method. The population of this research was the fourth year students and the sample was 24 students. The researcher used total sampling technique in selecting the sample. The researcher used a translation test as the research instrument. It was valid in terms of content because it measured what it was supposed to measure [4]. The researcher used the inter-rater technique to know the reliability of the instrument. The data were collected by using google form and analyzed by using the criteria of ability used at Bung Hatta University. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION The results of this research showed that the ability of the fourth year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University in translating a political news was good. It was proved by the fact that 62.5% had good ability. Table 1. Dealing with such conclusion, the next researchers are advised to do the research that relates to translating other types of text and they are also advised to conduct the research directly with a big sample. The students are suggested to train their ability in translating other texts and increase their vocabulary mastery in order to be able to find lexical equivalence when translating.
