AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ UTTERANCE WHEN PERFORMING AS A MASTER OF CEREMONY (MC) AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

INTRODUCTION One of the important media of communication for human being is language. Language is needed for the people to communicate with other. By using language someone can express ideas, thoughts and share some information. It means language is very important in human’s life. English as one of International languages becomes the essential language in the world. Many people coming from different countries use it as media of communication among them. As an International language, it is used as a mean of communication among people all over the world. Nowadays communication is really important for us, because with communication we can share our ideas and information to another people. In Indonesia, English has been taught from Elementary School until University. In Indonesia education system, the students study 4 integrated English skills, they are: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Speaking is one of the major skills that has an important function in the public. In speaking there is process called communication, which conveys a message from the speaker to listener. Speaking is also a tool of communication in teaching language as well. It gives many advantages to both teachers and students. [1]. In spoken communication, there are two components that should be known by students. They are linguistic communication and non - linguistic communication [2]. Speaking is a process of interaction where speakers intend to build meaning through producing, receiving and processing information [3]. Speaking skill is very necessary in our lives. Someone can be categorized as a good speaker if he or she is able to make interlocutor understand to his or her utterance [4]. Based on curriculum at English Department of Bung Hatta University, speaking is one of the four basic competences that have to be learnt by the students. There are several subjects to promote speaking, they are speaking description, speaking for argument, public speaking and English MC (Master of Ceremony). Master of Ceremony is the most competent person in controlling and succeeding an event, celebration, or event planned [5]. An MC must pay attention to linguistic factors which include pronunciation, diction, intonation, and effective reasoning/ sentence [6]. To be a good of Master of Ceremony learners should be able to diminish such problems. As a Master of Ceremony, they need to convey some information clearly and entertain the audience. In English MC class, many students still have difficulties in acquiring the skill of being MC. There are some problems to be a good Master of Ceremony. The students have problems dealing with utterance when performing as a Master of Ceremony such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and intonantion. The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ utterance when performing as a Master of Ceremony (MC) specifically (Vocabulary, Pronunciation, and Intonaton) at the English Department of Bung Hatta University METHOD The design of this research was descriptive research. Descriptive research involves collecting data in order to test hypothesis or answer questions concerning the current status of the subject of the study [7]. The population of this research was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population is 23 students. The sample of this research was chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through MC test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It means that there were two scorers to check the students’ speaking performance. To find out the correlation index of two sets of scores, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS The result of this research showed that the students’ utterance when performing as a Master of Ceremony (MC) at English Department of Bung Hatta University was good. In general, the students’ utterance when performing as a Master of Ceremony (MC) was classified into very good ability. It was found that 86,96% students got very good ability. In specific, the students’ utterance in pronunciation when performing as a Master of Ceremony was very good. It was proved by finding that 95,65% had very good ability. Students’ utterance in vocabulary when performing as a Master of Ceremony was very good ability. It was proved by fact that 100% had very good ability. The last, Students’ utterance in intonation when performing as a Master of Ceremony was very good ability. It was proved by fact that (62,21%) had very good ability .The students’ ability in each aspects is shown in Charts below. Table 1. Related to this, the lecturers are suggested to give more enrichment in speaking especially in intonation. The last, the students are suggested to maintain their ability in MC, especially in pronunciation and vocabulary.
