AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY AS INTERVIEWEE IN ATTENDING JOB INTERVIEW AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

INTRODUCTION English is the primary international language for communication. In learning English, there are four skills that should be mastered by the students. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. [1]. Among those skills, speaking is the most important one due to the large number of students who want to study English in order to be able to use English for communicative purposes [2]. In the learning process, there were many activities done by student in the speaking subject. One of them is interview. When they have good speaking it will be easier for them to attend a job interview. Interview is one of the most commonly used employment selection tools [3]. Job interview is an interview consisting of a conversation between a job applicant and a representative of an employer which is conducted to assess whether the applicant should be hired [4]. In Job interview there are two aspects; interviewer and interviewee. Related to the aspect of interview the researcher focused on the interviewee. The aspects that evaluated were the impression made by the interviewee in the job interview and the language used by the interviewee. Relating to this, the reseacher conducted this research on purpose of finding out and describe the third year students’ speaking ability as interviewee in attending a job interview at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. METHOD The design of this research was descriptive research. Descriptive research involves collecting data in order to test hypothesis or answer questions concerning the current status of the subject of the study [5]. The population of this research was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Population is larger group, and sample is a group, items, or events that represents the characteristics of the larger group from which the sample is drawn [6]. The number of population was 22 students. The sample of this research was chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. The criterion of a good test is reliability. Reliability is the degree of the test to measures whatever it measures. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. To find out the correlation index of two sets of scores, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS The result of this research showed in general, the students’ speaking ability as interviewee in attending job interview was classified into good ability and it was proved by finding that 50% students got good ability. Specifically, first, the Students’ Speaking Ability in Making Impression as Interviewee in Attending Job Interview was very good ability and it was proved by finding that 45.45% students’ ability in making impression was very good. Based on the result of the data analysis in 2 aspects, the results of language usage scores were lower than in making impressions, especially in the use of grammar. Dealing with such conclusion, it is suggested to the lecturers, they are suggested to give more exercises to improve the students’ speaking ability in language usage. especially in using grammar. The students are suggested to practice more and the further researcher is suggested to do research on the students’ ability in attending job interview as a whole aspect of job interview.
