Abstrak

The problems of this research were teacher’s domination in giving information at mathematical learning process and students’ passivity in getting and reminding what the teacher taught, then the students continued by doing routine questions. Those things caused they were difficult to solve mathematical reasoning questions. This research was aimed at finding out: (1) the effectivness of applying metacognitive strategy towards students’ ability improvement in mathematical reasoning (2) which ability improvemement in mathematical reasoning was better between students who were taught by metacognitive strategy and conventional learning. The kind of the research is experiment. The research used The Randomized Control Group Only Design. The population was all students in the academic year 2012/2013 on Class VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Solok. Two classes were chosen as samples. The instruments used in this research were pre-test and post-test. The study revealed several conclusions. First, generally, metacognitive strategy was effective in increasing students’ mathematical reasoning ability. Second, the students’ ability improvement in mathematical reasoning by metacognitive strategy was better than conventional learning based on Wilcoxon test of normalized gain value. Third, students’ mathematical reasoning who were taught by metacognitive strategy was better than conventional learning based on t-test result.
