AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS' ABILITY TO COMPLETE SENTENCE USING ADVERB OF MANNER IN SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

INTRODUCTION Grammar as the description of the ways in which words can change their forms and can be combined into sentences in the language [1]. Grammar is one of English components. It is learnt by for most of the English learners of junior high school, senior high school, and even university[2]. Adverb of manner is often used in daily life, whether in spoken or written form. It is also studied in Grammar subject at a university [3]. Therefore, the students need to have the ability to use adverb of manner. In addition, adverb of manner is one of the important aspects to complete the sentences and it is also one of the important aspects in grammar [4]. This research aimed at analyzing the second year students’ ability to complete sentence using adverb of manner in simple present tense at English Department Bung Hatta University. METHOD This research belongs to a descriptive research because it describes the current status of the research subject [5]. The population of this research was the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of sample was 38 students chosen by total sampling technique. The instrument of this research was grammar test in the form of multiple choice because the researcher wanted to know the second year students’ ability to complete sentence using adverb of manner in simple present tense. The data were recorded in the form of scores based on criteria of complete sentence using adverb of manner and researcher was analyzed by using the following steps: the researcher counted the average score of each student based on scores given by one scorer, the researcher converted the score into Bung Hatta University criteria, the researcher classified the students’ ability according to the criteria used at Bung Hatta University, the researcher counted the number of students who had very good, good, moderate and low ability. The researcher counted the percentage of students who had very good, good, moderate, and low ability and the researcher described the research results and made a conclusion. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS Based on the results of data analysis, In general, it was found that 22 students (57.89%) of the second year students of the English Department of Bung Hatta University had low ability to complete sentence using adverb manner in simple present tense. In detail, 18 students (47.36%) had low ability to use adverb of manner in positive simple present tense, 14 students (36.84%) had moderate ability to use adverb of manner in negative simple present tense, 16 students (42.10%) had low ability to use adverb of manner in yes-no question in simple present tense, 16 students (42.10%) had low ability to use adverb of manner in information question in simple present tense. The second one was the second year students’ ability in completing negative sentence using adverb of manner was The third was the second year students’ abilty in complete sentence using yes-no question. The last one was the second year students’ abilty in information question using adverb of manner. It is suggested to the next researchers to investigate the students’ ability to complete sentence using adverb of manner give they more exercise to make complete sentence using adverb of manner to see students ’comprehensive competencies. And there is a suggestion to the students to relearn and do the exercises in complete sentence using adverb of manner.
