AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO TRANSLATE A SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSE TEXT FROM ENGLISH INTO INDONESIAN AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

INTRODUCTION English is one of the tools that can be used in learning various fields for example Biology. We can get some knowledge of Biology books that use English if we master English language. English has some skills that support it. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Besides, English language has language components. They are grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. In addition, there is also an important skill that should be learnt by students. It is translation [1]. Translation is a process of transferring idea from one language into another language. [2]. Translation from English into Indonesian is important. Translation from English into Indonesian helps other people to understand about the meaning of word, meaning of sentence and meaning of text. Furthermore, there are many fields that can be translated such as economic, social, politic, affairs, education, and science [3]. In a nutshell, this knowledge is useful for society. METHODS In this study the researcher used descriptive method. Descriptive research involves collection data in order to test hypotheses or to answer question concerning the current status of the subject of the study [4]. The number of population of this research was 26 students. The researcher used total sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was translation test of scientific discourse text. The reliability index of the test was 0,93. The researcher administered the test in 40 minutes by using Google form application and the data were analyzed by calculating the average of students scores. Next, researcher counted the number of students and calculated the percentage of students who had excellent, good, fair, poor ability in translating scientific discourse text. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS The result of the research showed that generally the students have been able to translate a scientific discourse text from English into Indonesian. It was supported by the fact that 16 students (61.54%) who had excellent ability and 10 students (38.46%) who had good ability. In applying lexical equivalence 22 students (84.62%) had excellent ability, 4 students (15.38%) had good ability. In applying grammatical adjustment 1 student (3.85%) had excellent ability, 19 students (73.08%) had good ability, 5 students (19.23%) had fair ability, and 1 student (3.85%) had poor ability. CONCLUSSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Generally the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University have excellent ability in translating scientific discourse from English into Indonesian. For the lecturers, the lecturers should maintain and improve the students skill by giving some exercises. The researcher suggests the student train their ability in translation and study about the unfamiliar word and adjusting the grammar. The students should maintain the ability or even improve their skill. For the next researcher, the next researcher is advised to do the research that relates to translation scientific discourse especially, in translating scientific discourse from Indonesian into English.
