THE SPEAKING DIFFICULTIES OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS IN DESCRIBING PICTURES THROUGH ZOOM AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

INTRODUCTION In learning English, One of the language skills that should be mastered by the learners is speaking. Speaking is oral communication in using words or the ability to converse or to express of ideas fluently between speaker and listener[1]. There are several subjects to promote speaking skill, they are speaking description, speaking for argument, public speaking, MC, and news report. Learning speaking can be done with many media to help students in speaking description one of them is pictures. In online learning systems Zoom become one of the application that is often used now. Zoom is a learning media using video conference. Using zoom we can communicate with anyone via video. Zoom make it easy for teaching learning process during this pandemic and zoom make it easy to interact between teacher and students. The researcher found some previous-related research that related to this research. The first study was done by Shodik, (2020) he found that using the zoom application was able to make students more active in participating in group discussion activities and effective in making them more confident for online classes [2]. The second study was done by Khalisa Salsya Kirana (2020), she found that the third year Biology Department Students of Bung Hatta University having difficulty in using correct grammar and appropriate vocabulary [3]. Last study was done by Linggarjati (2018), she found that the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had no difficulty in speaking. As for as the researcher knows that there is no research about students speaking difficulties in describing pictures through zoom at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. METHOD The researcher used descriptive research for this research. By Refnita descriptive research involves collecting data in order to test hypotheses or to answer questions concerning the current status of the subject of the study [4]. The population of this research is the second year students at English department of Bung Hatta University. The number of the sample was 37 students taken by total sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was speaking test. In which students choose one picture that they want to describe. Then, the test was valid in terms of content because it had covered all materials that students had learnt. The reliability index was 0,46 which mean that the test was reliable. To collect the data the researcher sent the link schedule of the test to the students. Then, The students chose the pictures that researcher provide and the students were given 3-5 minutes to describe the picture and it was recorded. The researcher converted the score into Bung Hatta University criteria, and the researcher classified the students’ who had no difficulties and had difficulties. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION The results of the research showed the students have no difficulties in describing picture through zoom. It was supported by the fact that 37 students (100%) had no difficulties in describing picture through zoom. Specifically, 37 students (100%) had no difficulties in developing content in describing picture through zoom. Furthermore, 37 students (100%) had no difficulties in using vocabulary in describing picture through zoom. Then, 37 students (100%) had no difficulties in pronouncing words in describing picture though zoom. Last, 37 students (100%) had no difficulties in fluency in describing picture through zoom. The second year students’ difficulties in describing pictures through zoom at English Department of Bung Hatta University The results of data analysis show that, 37 students (100%) who classified into having no difficulties and 0 students (0%) classified into having difficulties. 2. The second year students’ difficulties in developing content through zoom at English Department of Bung Hatta University The result of the data proved that there were 37 students (100%) were classified into having no difficulties and 0 (0%) students were classified into having difficulties. Students express their idea in utterances that are relevant and acceptable language accuracy [5]. 3. The second year students’ difficulties in using vocabulary through zoom at English Department of Bung Hatta University The results of data analysis show that 37 students (100%) students were classified into having no difficulties and 0 (0%) students were classified into having difficulties. 4. The second year students’ difficulties in pronouncing words through zoom at English Department of Bung Hatta University After converting the score into Bung Hatta University criteria, 37 students (100%) were classified into having no difficulties and 0 (0%) students were classified into having difficulties. 5. The second year students’ difficulties in fluency through zoom at English Department of Bung Hatta University The second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University had no difficulties in fluency. It is supported by the fact that 37 students (100%) had no difficulties. By Sabariayanto (2020) students use the repetition strategy to improve their speaking ability in order to be able to say the word/sentence correctly. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Based on the finding, it can be concluded that the students had no difficulties in speaking describing picture through zoom at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Related to the study, the researcher gives some suggestions. To the students, as long as we are still willing to understand and learn English, often practicing speaking. Then students are also suggested to always practice themselves it can help to improve ability to speak English well. To the future researcher, the researchers suggested to use another pictures like nature, view, and role play that will be researched.
