Abstrak

The background underlied this research was that students' problem-solving abilities were classified as poor in world problem. This study aimed to describe student’s errors in solving math world problem based on Newman's procedure at SMP Negeri 25 Padang. This research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive type. The instrument in this study was a mathematical description test and interviews, the research subjects were by 5 students from 32 grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 25 Padang. Results showed that the types of errors appeared when students completed the mathematical description test the topic of a circle were: 1) comprehention, this type of error 2 had the largest percentage in questions number 3 and 4, which is 43.48%. 2) the transformation of the error type 3 problem had the largest percentage in question number 4, which is 40.58%. 3) process skills, this type of error 4 had the largest percentage in question number 3, which is 52.17%. 4) encoding, this type of error 5 had the largest percentage in question number 3, which is 59.42%. The factors that cause students to made mistakes were rushing in solving questions, not focused when solving problems, students rarely worked on examples of questions related to circle on geometry and students not being accustomed to wrote down problem solving systematically.
