Abstrak

The background of this research is the lack of ability to write summaries of students' explanatory texts and the low student learning outcomes in learning Indonesian for fifth grade students at SDN 24 Ujung Gurun, Padang city. The purpose of this research is to improve students' ability to write summaries of explanatory texts in learning Indonesian through the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. The theory used as a reference is Tarigan's theory (2013) in writing, Officialni (2006) learning Indonesian, the Problem Based Learning model is used by Duch's theory (1995). This type of research is classroom action research carried out collaboratively. This research was conducted in two cycles. The subjects in the study were fifth grade students at SDN 24 Ujung Gurun, Padang City. The research instruments were teacher activity observation sheets, student activity observation sheets and student results test sheets. Based on the results of the research on the observation sheet of teacher activity in cycle I it has a percentage of 77% with an average of 81.69 while in cycle II it has a percentage of 92% with an average of 98.46. Furthermore, on the observation sheet of student activity in cycle I it has a percentage of 72% with an average of 75.66 while in cycle II it has a percentage of 88% with an average of 92.27 and on student learning outcomes in cycle I has an average of 84.54 while in cycle II it has an average of 92.27. The results of this study can be concluded that the ability to write a summary of explanatory text using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model increases.
