An Analysis of the Third Year Students’ Ability of English Department of Bung Hatta University in Identifying the Imageries on the Poems “Halloween Night” and “Seasons”

Abstrak

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ ability in identifying the imageries on the poem “Halloween Night” and “Seasons” at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The researcher asked the students to identify the imageries on the poem “Halloween Night” and “Seasons”. The students should consider 2 aspects, they are; the ability to identify visual imagery, and the ability to identify auditory imagery on the poem “Halloween Night” and “Seasons”. The population of this study was the third year students of English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Bung Hatta University in even semester. To select the sample the researcher used simple random sampling technique. The total numbers of sample are twenty (20) students. The data were collected by asking them to identify the imageries on the poem “Halloween night” and “Seasons”. To make the test reliable the researcher used product moment formula by using two scorers, before doing the real test the researcher did try out test. The total number of try out test was fifteen (15) students. The score of coefficient correlation of the test was 0.97 it was very high correlation. Generally, the result of this study showed that the third year students’ ability in identifying the imageries on the poem ”Halloween Night” and “Seasons” at English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate. It could be seen that 60% students had moderate ability, 20% students had high ability and 20% students had low ability. In detail the percentages of each aspects in identifying the imageries were 60% students had moderate ability in identifying visual imagery, 75% students had moderate ability in identifying auditory imagery.
