AN ANALYSIS OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENT’S READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT AT SMA N 1 PAINAN KAB. PESISIR SELATAN
Abstrak
The purpose of this research was to describe the tenth-grade students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at SMAN 1 Painan Kab. Pesisir Selatan. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research is 269 students of the tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Painan Kab. Pesisir Selatan. Stratified cluster random sampling was used to select the sample, the number of samples was 49 students. The data were collected through a reading test. The reliability index of the test was 0.69 (high correlation). That means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in terms of content because it covered the material that the students had learned at SMA N 1 Painan Kab. Pesisir Selatan. In general, this study revealed that the tenth grade stufdents’ comprehension of narrative text at SMAN 1 Painan Kab. Pesisir Selatan was very poor. It was proved that 43 students (88%) had very poor comprehension of narrative text. In detail, Students’ comprehension on orientation was very poor (37 students (76%)), the students’ comprehension on complication was very poor (42 students (86%) ), students’ comprehension on resolution, was very poor (39 students (80%) ), and student’s comprehension on reorientation was very poor (41 students (84%) ). Based on the finding, the researcher suggested to the English teacher at SMAN 1 Painan Kab. Pesisir Selatan to give some more exercises in reading narrative text to improve the students' comprehension in reading narrtive text. The students are also suggested to do more exercises in reading comprehending narative text in order to improve their reading comprehension of narrative text, especially comprehending orientation,complication, reorientation, and future researcher are suggested to use this research as reference.
