Abstrak

This study aimed to describe politeness writer on the Padang Ekspresnewspaper.Theory that used are pragmatic meaning,politeness principle, the types of politeness principle that propounded by R. Kunjana Rahardi (2005). This research is a qualitative study using descriptive method. The object of this study is the language in the letters to the editor section of newspapers opinion Padang Express. The technique of gathering data in this research (1) collecting Padang Ekspres newspaper of issue 1 to 15 May 2014, (2) to read and understand each issue contained letters to the editor in a newspaper opinion column Padang Express, (3) Collecting the data that has been marked into the table. The technique of analyzing is performed as follows: (1) analyzing the data that have been grouped according to the aspects that have been studied, (2) interpreting the results of data analysis, and (3) formulating research results. From the resultof data analysis found that there are three types of maxims that are more dominant usedby speaker in communicating with the opponent, the wisdom maxims, maxims awards, and maxims consensus. Meanwhile, the three other of maxim, generosity maxim, maxim of simplicity, and also used the maxim awards in speaking but not as much as the use of wisdom maxims, maxims awards, and maxims consensus. Thus, it can be concluded that the letter Padang Ekspres newspaper reader already has a good level of politeness in conveying information, suggestions, or complaints.
