ABSTRACT


This study aimed to describe the ability to read a short story text comprehension using a scientific approach through inquiry method seventh grade students of SMPN 33 Padang. The theory used is the opinion of Agustina (2008) on reading comprehension, Priyatni (2012) tentag short story text, Sani (2014) on the scientific approaches and methods of inquiry. This research is a quantitative research using descriptive method. Based on the analysis that has been done can be seen that the level of reading comprehension text short story by using a scientific approach through inquiry method in class VII SMP Negeri 33 Padang are as follows: (1) the student is able to determine the accuracy of the story but is not able to determine its completeness; (2) the student is able to use the phrase of effective and systematic; (3) the student is able to determine the accuracy of the figures but is unable to determine its completeness; (4) The student is able to determine the accuracy of the character but is unable to determine its completeness; (4) The student is able to determine the accuracy of background but is unable to determine its completeness; and (5) the student is unable to determine the accuracy of the theme and kelengkpannya. The average value of students' skills in reading comprehension text of the short story that is 75, the median value is 78, the value of the mode is 81 and the standard deviation is 7.07. Thus, it was concluded that the ability to read text comprehension of short stories by using the scientific approach through inquiry method seventh grade students of SMPN 33 Padang is quite good.
