AN ANALYSIS ON THE ABILITY OF THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY TO PRONOUNCE ENGLISH VOWELS

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the first year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University to pronounce English vowels. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the first year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total number of population members of this research was 58 students and they were distributed in groups (classes). The number of sample was 29 students. It was chosen by cluster random sampling technique to get representative sample. The instrument of this research was pronunciation test. Total of items specification were 30 items. The time given was 60 minutes. To find the reliability, this research used inter rater method. The reliability index of the test was .86. Based on the result of analyzing the data, it was found that the ability of the first year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University in pronouncing English vowels was moderate. It was supported by the data that 20 (68.96%) students had moderate ability. Specifically, 19 (65.52%) students had moderate ability in pronouncing vowel sound /i:/, 19 (65.52%) students had moderate ability in pronouncing vowel sound /æ/, 26 (89.66%) students had moderate ability in pronouncing vowel sound /ᴧ/, 18 (62.07%) students had moderate ability in pronouncing vowel sound /ɔ:/, 18 (62.07%) students had moderate ability in pronouncing vowel sound /u:/, and 16 (55.17%) students had moderate ability in pronouncing vowel sound /ᴈ:/.
