THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION AND THEIR SPEAKING ABILITY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY.

ABSTRACT
The type of this research was correlational study. This research was aimed to find out the correlation between the third year students’ motivation and their speaking ability at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The population of this research was all of the third year students of Bung Hatta University who register in 2015/2016 academic year. The number of population members was 53 students. They were distributed in two classes. To choose the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique, and the sample of this research was 30 students. The researcher used two instruments to collect the data. First was questionnaire to collect data on students’ motivation (x) and second was speaking test to collect data on students’ speaking ability (y). Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that rcounted was .457. The value of rtable with level of significance .05 and degree of freedom (df = n-2) was .374. It means that rcounted was bigger than rtable (.457 > .374). The hypothesis “the significant correlation between students’ motivation of the third year students of Bung Hatta University and their speaking ability” was accepted. From the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ motivation of the third year students of Bung Hatta University and their speaking ability. it can be concluded that motivation correlate with students speaking ability. The researcher proposes suggestions. First is for lecturers, in order to improve students’ speaking ability, lecturers should increase students’ motivation in speaking and make their students’ speaking ability become better. For students, in order to improve their speaking ability, they should build their motivation with some external and internal motivation. For the next researchers, they should consider other factors that correlate with students speaking ability.
