AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN TRANSLATING NARRATIVE TEXT FROM ENGLISH INTO INDONESIAN AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
This research was aimed to describe the third year students’ ability in translating narrative text. The researcher used descriptive design. The population of this research was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total population was 56 students. To get the sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling. The number of sample was 28 students. The data of this research were gathered by using translation test. To know the reliability of the test, the researcher used inter-rater technique. The test was reliable because the value of r-calculated was 0.94. Based on the analyzing, it was found that the students had moderate ability in translating narrative text in general it showed that (75%) 21 students had moderate ability. Specifically, the result of the research showed that: the students’ ability in the aspect of functional and textual adequacy, 0 students had high ability (0%), 23 students had moderate ability (82.14%), 5 students had low ability (17.86%); (2) 3 students (10.7%) had high ability, 24 students (85.71%) had moderate ability, 1 students (3.57%) had low ability in translating narrative text from English into Indonesian text in the aspect of target language; (3) 2 students (7.14%) had high ability, 25 students (89.3%) had moderate ability, 1 students had low ability (3.57%) in translating narrative text from English into Indonesian test in the aspect of non-specialized content (meaning); (4) 2 students (7.14%) had high ability, 19 students (67.85%) had moderate ability, 7 students (25%) had low ability in translating narrative text from English into Indonesian text in the aspect of specialized content and terminology. Based on the result of this research, the lecturers are suggested to improve their teaching learning process and give more exercises in translating narrative text. The students are expected to learn more about narrative text and do more exercises on it to improve their translation skill.
