Teaching Reading Comprehension by Using SQ3R to Senior High School

ABSTRACT
The purpose of writing this paper is to discuss teaching reading comprehension by using SQ3R to senior high school. As we know, reading is not an easy skill while we need such skill in order to be able to understand the content of a text. In fact, senior high school students still have several obstructions. They cannot focus on reading text, and their verbal reasoning is weak so that they are not able to connect the ideas. As alternative solutions for improving the students’ reading ability, teacher can use SQ3R in teaching reading. SQ3R is an effective technique to teach reading for senior high school because it can make students think about the text they are reading, determine the important details in a reading text and select the information to draw conclusions. The procedures or steps how to teach reading comprehension using SQ3R to senior high school are ; Survey : The students survey of a reading text. Pay special attention to headings, subheadings, topic sentences. Question : The students make questions for each heading and subheading in the text selection. These questions will be answered during the close reading of the text. Read : The students read the text carefully.Recite : The students recite the answers to the questions by group discussion. Review : Then the teacher gives some questions to review students understanding.
