AN ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY MADE BY THE FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
This study aimed to find out the grammatical errors made by the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of the research was descriptive. The population of this research was the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The members of the population was 113 students. The reseacher took 35 students (class A) as the sample. In selecting sample, the reseacher used cluster random sampling technique. The researcher found the reliability of the test by using inter-rater method. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (.90). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of data analysis revealed that the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University made grammatical errors in writing an argumentative essay. It can be seen that 51,42% or 18 students made grammatical error of using subject_verb agreement, 40,00% or 14 students made grammatical error of using verb tense, 40,00% or 14 students made grammatical error of using verb form, 74,29% or 26 students made grammatical error of using singular/plural noun ending, 60,00% or 21 students made grammatical of using word form. Based on the result, the writer gives suggestions for lecturers to pay attention about student’s grammatical errors in writing and minimize it by creative ways. For students, it is suggested for them to minimize the grammatical errors by doing various activities to improve their ability in writing, especially in writing an argumentative essay with good grammar. For writers are expected to find and analyze the factors which influence the students’ grammatical errors in writing an argumentative essay.
