AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ LISTENING DIFFICULTIES IN COMPREHENDING CONVERSATION AT SMPN 1 2X 11 ENAM LINGKUNG

Abstract
The objective of this research was to describe the listening difficulties of the second year students of SMPN 1 2X11 Enam Lingkung in comprehending conversation. This research was limited to the students’ listening difficulties in comprehending the content, general idea, and specific information of conversation. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the second year students of SMPN 1 2X11 Enam Lingkung. The number of population members was 283 students. The researcher took the sample by using stratified cluster random sampling technique. The researcher took one class as sample; VIII. 4. The number of sample members was 32 students. The data were collected by giving a listening test in the form of multiple choice. To know the reliability of the test, the researcher used split half method. The reliability index of this test was .83 and it was categorized into very high. The result of analyzing the data showed that the researcher found out; 20 students had difficulties, 12 students had no difficulties in comprehending conversation, 21 students had difficulties, 11 students had no difficulties in comprehending the content of conversation, 22 students had difficulties, 10 students had no difficulties in comprehending general idea of conversation, and 18 students had difficulties, 14 students had no diffficulties in comprehending specific information of conversation. The researcher gives suggestion to English teacher, the students and the further researcher. The English teacher are suggested to give more explanation and exercises about conversation. The students are suggested to study hard and often doing exercise, especially about the content, general idea, and specific information of conversation. The next researchers are expected to find and analyze the factors which cause the students’ listening difficulties in comprehending conversation.
