ANALYSIS ON THE FOURTH YEAR ENGLISH STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN TRANSLATING A NEWS TEXT FROM INDONESIAN TO ENGLISH AT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the fourth year students of English Department, the Faculty of Teacher Training and eEducation at Bung Hatta University in translating a news text from Indonesian into English. The total number of population of this research was 83 students and the number of sample was 20 students. The instrument used to get the data was translation test. From the result of analyzing the data in translating news text, the researcher found that there were 2 students (10%) who had high ability, 16 students (80%) who had moderate ability and 2 students (10%) who had low ability. Specifically, the students’ ability in translating news text in terms of lexical equivalence was moderate. There were 2 students (10%) who had high ability, 17 students (85%) who had moderate ability and 1 student (5%) who had low ability. And the students’ ability in translating news text in term of grammatical adjustment was moderate. There were 2 students (10%) who had high ability, 16 students (80%) who had moderate ability and 2 students (10%) who had low. Referring to the results of this study, the researcher suggests the students to improve their ability in translating by doing more exercises and practicing translation. It is expected that the lecturers give the students more exercises to improve their vocabulary mastery and to add their knowledge about the rules in grammar. Translation lecturers should also develop their teaching materials to improve students’ ability in translating. Further researchers are suggested to do other translation researches to find out other aspects in translating news text from Indonesian into English.
