Abstract
This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ simple past tense and and their vocabulary mastery toward their ability in writing recount text at the third year of SMPN 18 Padang. The hypothesis of this research was that if there was a significant correlation between students’ simple past tense and their vocabulary mastery toward their ability in writing recount text at the third year of SMPN 18 Padang. The number of population was 183 students. There were distributed into six classes; IX 1, IX 2, IX 3, IX 4, IX 5, IX 6, IX 7, IX 8, IX 9 . The researcher took two classes as sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The classes selected as sample were classes IX 4 and IX 6. The researcher gathered the data by using simple past tense test to measure students’simple past tense mastery, vocabulary test to measure students’ vocabulary mastery and writing test to measure students’ ability in writing recount text. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Multiple Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the value of coefficient of three variables was .78 and f- counted was 37.325 (α 0.05) and the degree of freedom (df) n-k-1 (27), value of f- table was 3.32. It means that f- counted (37.325) was bigger that f- table (3.32). Therefore, the relationship between three variables, simple past tense mastery, vocabulary mastrey and ability in writing was significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating “there is a significant correlation between students’ simple past tense and and their vocabulary mastery toward their ability in writing recount text at the third year of SMPN 18 Padang” was accepted.
Key words: correlation, simple past tense mastery, vocabulary mastery, and writing ability
