AN ANALYSIS OF THE NINTH GRADE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN ASKING FOR REPETITION AT SMP NEGERI 3 LINGGO SARI BAGANTI PESISIR SELATAN SUMATERA BARAT
Abstrak
The aim of this research was to describe the speaking ability of the ninth grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Linggo Sari Baganti in asking for repetition. The design of research was descriptive research. The populations of this research were the ninth grade at SMP Negeri 3 Linggo Sari Baganti. The total number of population was 126 students. They were distributed into six classes; class IX.1, IX.2, IX.3, IX.4, IX.5, and IX.6. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to select the sample. The sample was class XI.1 that has 22 members. Students’ speaking ability in asking repetition is evaluated based on five components, they are : content, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and pronunciation. Based on the result of data analysis, it is indicated that the ninth grade students’ speaking ability in asking for repetition at SMP Negeri 3 Linggo Sari Baganti in general was moderate. It was proved by the evidence that 59.1 % of them was moderate ability. There were 16 students (72.7%) students who had moderate ability in expressing content, 13 students (59.1%) who had moderate ability in using grammar, 18 students (81.8%) who had moderate ability in choosing vocabulary, 15 students (68.2%) who had moderate ability in pronunciation, 17 students (77.3%) who had moderate ability in fluency. Related to this conclusion, she suggested to English teachers to consider proportionally the five components of speaking (content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency) in teaching speaking. In addition, English teachers are suggested to provide more practices for those components of speaking.
