AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN WRITING A COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAYAT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the difficulties faced by the third year students of English Department at Bung Hatta University in writing a comparison and contrast essay. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the third year of English Department in academic year 2015/2016. The member of population was 55 students; they were distributed into two classes; class A and B. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to get the sample. The total number of sample members was 23 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing test in the form of comparison and contrast essay. After calculating the data, the researcher found that the coefficient correlation of the test was .99 (very high). It means that the result of the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity. The result of the data analysis showed that 17 students (73.91%) out of 23 students had difficulties in writing a comparison and contrast essay. There were 16 students (69.56%) out of 23 students who had difficulties in organizing idea, 20 students (86.96%) out of 23 students who had difficulties in applying grammar, 18 students (78.26%) out of 23 students who had difficulties in choosing words (vocabulary), 10 students (43.48%) out of 23 students who had difficulties in applying transition signal, 21 students (91.30%) out of 23 students who had difficulties in applying mechanics. Finally, the students are expected to practice much harder in writing in the future. Besides, the researcher also gives suggestion to the lecturers to pay more attention to the students’ difficulties in writing a comparison and contrast essay. Furthermore, the researcher suggests the next researchers to find other research findings related to this research.
