An Analysis of the Second Grade Students’ Ability in Listening to Conversation at SMPN 2 Padang

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ ability in listening to conversation at SMPN 2 Padang. The design of this research was descriptive in nature. The population of this research was 289 second grade students at SMPN 2 Padang. In selecting the sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling technique. The number of sample was 34 students. The result of the data analysis showed that the second grade students at SMPN 2 Padang were classified into having moderate ability. It was proved by the fact that 24 students from 34 students (70.58%) had moderate ability. In details, It was proved by the fact that 5 students (14.71%) had high ability and 5 students (14.71%) had low ability. The students’ ability in comprehending the participants was moderate. It was due to the fact that 23 students (67.64%) had moderate ability. The students’ ability in comprehending the topis was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 21 students (61.76%) had moderate ability. The students’ ability in comprehending the place was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 27 students (79.41%) had moderate ability. The students’ ability in comprehending the time was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 34 students (100%) had moderate ability. Based on the result, English teachers should motivate the students give more exercises in conversation in listening class. Students should pay attentions to lessons more and do more exercises about conversation especially about participants, the topic, the place and the time. Further researchers should do the research to find the factors that improve the ability of the students in listening to conversation and find good solutions to solve the problems.
