TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION TO JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL BY USING NUMBERED HEADS TOGETHER TECNIQUE OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING
Abstrak
Abstract
This paper aims to describe Numbered Heads Together (NHT) or often also called Numbered Head technique that can be used by English teachers to improve reading comprehension texts of junior high school students. There are four basic steps of this technique that must be taken by the teacher, namely; (1) dividing the students into groups and giving a number for each student, (2) discussing the texts and questions related to the texts, (3) having students to discuss the text and searching the answers to questions that have been given together, and (4) calling a number at random to provide the answers that have been discussed. On this strategy, the teacher can also add other variation as long as the procedure does not change essentially. This strategy requires each student to be ready with the answers that they have discussed, because nobody knows what the number to be called by the teacher. It requires students to read and understand the text. It will be easier to understand the text if the students help each other in the group. It is hoped the ability of students' reading comprehension can be improved by using this strategy.
