ABSTRACT

 

This research was aimed to describe the grammatical errors made by the second year students of SMANegeri7Sijunjung in transforming reported speech.The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students of SMANegeri7Sijunjung. The number of the population members was162 students. The number of sample members was 50 students from both XI Exact science 1 class and XI social science 3 class.The most grammatical errors in reported speech made by the second year students of SMA Negeeri 7 Sijunjung were verb phrase errors in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in past tense. The less grammatical errors in reported speech made by the second year students of SMA Negeri 7 Sijunjung were word order errors in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in present perfect tense. The teachers are suggested to pay attention to the grammar when they teach about reported speech and find appropriate strategy to minimize the students’ errors. The students should study the rules on reported speech in the correct form and practice more about it. The researcher suggests other researchers to find out the causes of errors made by the students in transforming reported speech
