AN ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL ERRORS MADE BY THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS AT SMAN 1 TANJUNG MUTIARA IN WRITING NEWS ITEM TEXT

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research was to find out grammatical errors made by the first year students of SMAN 1 Tanjung Mutiara in writing news item text. The population was 339 first year students of SMAN 1 Tanjung Mutiara. They were divided into ten classes. The sample of this research was class X.1 (29 students). The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to get representative sample. The instrumentation used to get the data was the writing test. To know the reliability of the test, the researcher used inter-rater technique. The result of data analysis of try out revealed that reliability index of the test was .99. It means the test was reliable. The result of analyzing data showed there were grammatical errors made by the first year students at SMAN 1 Tanjung Mutiara in writing news item text. The researcher divided grammatical errors made by those students into three types. They were 13% grammatical error of omission, 5.17% grammatical error of addition, and 6.90% grammatical error of misformation. The finding leads the researcher to conclude that the first year students at SMAN I Tanjung Mutiara made grammatical errors in writing news item text. The researcher suggests the students to practice more in writing so that the students can avoid of producing kind of grammatical errors in their writing especially in writing news item text. For the next researcher, it is suggested to find source of errors and the cause of errors made by the students in writing.
