AN ANALYSIS OF FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT IN ANSWERING HIGHER LEVEL QUESTIONS AT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
This research was aimed to find out the fourth year students’ reading ability in answering higher level questions. The design of this research was descriptive. The members of population of this research were 79. The researcher used cluster random sampling in taking the sample since the students were distributed into 3 classes. The researcher took about 33.33% of population as the sample. It means there were 26 students as the sample. The instrument of this research was reading test, in form of multiple choice. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the students’ ability in answering higher level questions was moderate. It was indicated by the fact that 18 students (66.66%) had moderate ability. In more specific, the researcher found their ability in answering questions on the level of analysis was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 18 students (66.67%) had moderate ability. Next, their ability in answering questions on the level of synthesis was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 17 students (62.96) had moderate ability. Last, their ability in answering questions on the level of evaluation was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 19 students (70.37%) had moderate ability. Based on the findings, a simple conclusion could be drawn that the reading ability of fourth year students of English Department in answering higher level questions at Bung Hatta University was moderate.
