AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN LISTENING DESCRIPTIVE MONOLOGUE AT MTsN PARAK LAWAS PADANG

Abstract
This research was aimed to find out students’ difficulty in listening descriptive monologue at the second grade of MTsN Parak Lawas Padang. The population of this study was the second year students of MTsN Parak Lawas Padang. The total of population were 205 students. The researcher took two classes as sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The classes selected as sample were classes VIII1 and VIII2. The instrument used to get the data was listening test. The researcher tried out the test to the students out of sample. The researcher calculated item difficulty and item discrimination for try out. The researcher used split half method to know the reliability of the test. The researcher found the reliability of the test reliable (see Appendix 6). The test was valid in terms of content validity.The result of the data analysis showed that 30 students (73%) (see Appendix 14) got difficulties in listening descriptive monologue, 24 students (59%) (see Appendix 16) got difficulties in listening identification of descriptive monologue, and 23 students (56%) (see Appendix 18) got difficulties in listening description of descriptive monologue.It can be concluded that 73% students got difficulties in listening descriptive monologue. Dealing with the conclusions of this research, the researcher has suggestion for English teachers to improve students’ skill in listening descriptive monologue. For the students, they are suggested to do more exercise about listening. And for the next researcher it is suggested to do relevant research from different point of view and another kind of listening material, such as narrative monologue, recount monologue, procedure monologue and etc.
