AN ANALYSIS OF THE FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN COMPREHENDING SHORT STORYOF A VISIT OF CHARITY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in comprehending short story of A Visit of Charity. The design of this research was descriptive. The number of population members was 82 students. To select the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique. In general, the result of the data analysis revealed that most of the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had very good ability (24%), had good ability (16%), had moderate ability (24%) and bad ability (36%) in comprehending short story of A Visit of Charity. In specific, the result of the data analysis revealed that most of fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had moderate and bad ability (60%) in comprehending the plot, had very good and good ability (68%) in comprehending the character, had moderate and bad ability (64%) in comprehending the setting, had very good and good ability (52%) in comprehending the symbol, and had bad ability (60%) in comprehending the point of view in the short story of a Visit of Charity. Based on the results, the researcher suggests to lecturer who teach reading to give students more explanation about short story and give more exercises to improve their skills. The students are suggested to learn more about short story and to do more exercises in order to improve their ability in comprehending short story.
