AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN RECOGNIZING SUPPORTING DETAILS IN PARAGRAPH AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ ability in recognizing supporting details in paragraph.Relating to this, the researcher used descriptive method. The population of this research was the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total population was 46 students. To get the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling. The number of sample was 26 students. The data of this research were gathered by using reading test in the form of writing. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that 73.08% students had moderate ability and bad ability in recognizing supporting details. Then the result of the study also revealed that 84.62% students had very good ability and good ability in recognizing major supporting details. In addition, in recognizing minor supporting details, the result showed that 76.92% students had moderate ability and bad ability. Based on those findings above, it could be concluded that the students’ ability in recognizing supporting details was categorized into moderate and bad ability. Based on the result, the researcher suggests lecturers to give more explanation to recognize supporting details and to differentiate major supporting details and minor details in order to improve their reading ability. The researcher suggests the students to do more exercises and re-read the material in order to improve their reading ability.
