AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING SIMPLE SENTENCES USING PHRASAL VERBS AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the third year students in writing simple sentences using phrasal verbs at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 54 students. They were divided into two classes. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample. The result of data revealed that 30 students (55.56%) had very good ability in writing simple sentences using phrasal verbs. Specifically, the result revealed that 30 students (55.56%) had very good ability in writing simple sentences using inseparable phrasal verb with basic meaning, 35 students (64.81%) had very good ability in writing simple sentences using inseparable phrasal verbs with idiomatic meaning, 34 students (62.96%) had very good ability in writing simple sentences using separable phrasal verbs related to clothing, cleaning, and household items, and 30 students (55.56%) had very good ability in writing simple sentences using separable phrasal verbs related to school or studies. Since the ability of students was very good, the lecturers are suggested to give more exercises that are more difficult such as writing compound or complex sentences using phrasal verbs. Then students are suggested to do more exercises that are more difficult. For the next researchers, they are suggested to find out students’ ability in writing compound or complex sentences using phrasal verbs.
