THE ABILITY OF THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF MTsN PARAK LAWAS TO WRITE SIMPLE SENTENCE IN SIMPLE PAST TENSE BY USING REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the second grade students of MTsN Parak Lawas to write simple sentence in simple past tense by using regular and irregular verbs. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The total of population was 207 students.The researcher used convenience sampling to select 38 students as the sample.The number of sample was 38 students. . The data of this research were gathered by using sentence writing test.The researcher used inter-rater method to make the test reliable.Coefficient correlation of the test was.99(very high). The test was valid in terms of content validity.Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the students had low ability (44.74%) in writing simple sentence in simple past tense by using regular and irregular verbs. Specifically, 18 students (47.37%) had high ability and 20 students (52.63%) had low ability in writing simple affirmative sentences in past tense using regular verbs, 20 students (52.63%) had high ability and 18 students (47.37%) had low ability in writing simple affirmative sentences in past tense using irregular verbs, 18 students (47.37%) had high ability and 20 students (52.63%) had low ability in writing simple negative sentencesin past tense using regular verbs, 14 students (36.84%) had high ability and 24 students (63.16%) had low ability in writing simple negative sentences in past tense using irregular verbs, 23 students (60.53%) had high ability and 15 students (39.47%) had low ability in writing yes/no questions in past tense using regular verbs, 21 students (55.26%) had high ability and 17 students (44.74%) had low ability in writing yes/no questions in past tense using irregular verbs,12 students (31.58%) had high ability and 26 students (68.42%) had low ability in writing information questions in past tense using regular verbs, and 18 students (47.37%) had high ability and 20 students (52.63%) had low ability in writing information questions in past tense using irregular verbs.Based on the result, the researcher gives suggestions to the teachers to explain and give more exercisesabout the past tense. The students are suggested to study harder and learn more about simple past tense especially in writing simple sentence in past tense using regular and irregular verbs.
