AN ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS` LISTENING ABILITY IN COMPREHENDING THE PROCEDURE TEXT AT SMAN 1 BATIPUH TANAH DATAR REGENCY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the first grade students at SMAN 1 Batipuh Tanah Datar Regency in comprehending the procedure text through listening. The design of this research was descriptive in nature. The population of this research was 288 first grade students at SMAN 1 Batipuh Tanah Datar Regency. In selecting the sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling technique. The number of sample was 28 students. The result of the data analysis showed that the first grade students at SMAN 1 Batipuh Tanah Datar Regency were classified into having good ability. It was proved by the fact that 16 students out of 28 students (57%) had good ability. In details, the students’ ability in comprehending the contents of procedure text were 14 students (50%) good and 14 students (50%) bad. Students’ ability in comprehending the language features was good. It was due to the fact that 15 students (54%) had good ability and 13 students (46%) had bad ability. Based on the result of the research, the English Teachers are suggested to give more exercises and motivation to the students. The students are expected to learn more and to do more exercises in comprehending the procedure text through listening, the next researchers are suggested to do relevant researches from different point of view and other kinds of text such as: to find out the students` ability in comprehending narrative text through listening.
