Abstract

The outcome of students’ mathematic learning grade VII at SMPN 31 Padang still under the KKM, one of the causes is the lack of student activity in the learning process. To overcome this, one of the efforts is by applying the learning model Problem Based Learning. With the implementation of this model students can be expected to respond to the learning material well, like to ask, give opinions, solve problems, listen to explanations from friends or teachers and are involved in concluding the material related to the problems on the worksheets provided and can measure the ability of students by holding a quiz every beginning of the next meeting. The purpose of this study is to describe the development of the activity and know the results of students' mathematics learning by using model Problem Based Learning is better than on the development of the activity and results of mathematics learning by using the usual learning in grade VII SMPN 31 Padang. This type of research is experimental. The population in the study are students of grade VII SMPN 31 Padang in academic year 2015/2016 consisting of five classes. Samples are taken two classes using the test of homogeneity of ability and selected class VII6 as an experimental group and class VII7 as the control group. The results show that the percentage of activities carried out experimental group students tend to be higher than the control group. Then the percentage of students on experimental group  the mastery quiz also tend to be higher grade than the control group. While student test results are analyzed using χ2 formula. Retrieved count χ2 = 6.67 with α = 0.05 and df = 1 obtained  χ 2 (0.95; 1) = 3.84. Turns χ2 > χ2 (0.95; 1). Conclusion H0 is rejected, otherwise is accepted H1. It means that the learning outcomes of students learning mathematics applying the learning model Problem Based Learning is better than learning outcomes for students learning mathematics applying the usual learning.
