AN ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN TELLING THEIR DAILY ACTIVITIES AT SMPN 14 PADANG

Abstract
The aim of this research was describing the speaking ability of the first grade students at SMPN 14 Padang in telling their daily activities. The design of this research was descriptive method. The population of this research was the first grade students at SMPN 14 Padang. The total number of population was 300 students. They were distributed into nine classes. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 62. The data were collected through speaking test. The researcher asked the students to tell their daily activities in front of the class one by one. The researcher only measured the ability of the first grade students’ speaking in telling their daily activities by considering five components of speaking. Based on the result of data analysis, the first grade students speaking ability in telling their daily activities at SMPN 14 Padang in general was low. It was proved by the evidence that 85.49%% of them cannot tell their daily activities orally. Based on the researcher’s finding. the researcher concludes that the speaking ability of the first grade students in telling their daily activities was low. Relating to this conclusion. she suggested English teachers to consider the five components of speaking when measuring students’ speaking ability. In addition, English teachers are suggested to provide more practices for those components of speaking. The students are suggested to do more practices and improve their comprehension about material especially in speaking.
