AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO USE NOUN CLAUSE IN WRITING COMPLEX SENTENCE AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ ability to use noun clause in writing complex sentence at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Specifically, it aimed at describing the students’ ability to use noun clause by using wh-word clauses and if/whether clauses as subject and object in simple past tense. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. In selecting the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. The number of sample was 54 students. The result of the data analysis showed that the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University were classified into having moderate ability to use noun clause in writing complex sentence in simple past tense. It was proved by the fact that 32 students from 54 students (59.25%) had moderate ability. In details, it was proved by the fact that 12 students (22.23%) had high ability and 10 students (18.52%) had low ability. Based on the result, English teachers are suggested to give more explanation and exercises about noun clause especially by using wh-word clauses and if/whether clauses in writing noun clause in complex sentence. Students are suggested to study more to write noun clause in complex sentence by using wh-word clauses and if/whether clauses. Then they should have more attention to improve their ability especially in writing noun clause by using wh-word clauses and if/whether clauses in complex sentence.
