AN ANALYSIS ON THE ABILITY OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS IN COMPREHENDING TOPIC AND STATED MAIN IDEA IN ENGLISH PARAGRAPHS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The aim of this research was to find out the ability of the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University in Comprehending Topic and Stated Main Idea in English Paragraphs. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was 56 students of second year at English Department of Bung Hatta University. In selecting the sample the writer used total sampling techniques. The total number of the sample was 56 students, 28 students are from class A, 28 students are from class B. From the result of analyzing the data, the writer found that the students’ reading ability in comprehending topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 39 students (69.64%) classified as moderate ability, 8 students (14.28%) classified as high ability, , and 9 students (16.07%) classified as low ability. Based on the data it is concluded that the students’ reading ability in comprehending topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs was moderate (69.64%). Based on the conclusion the English lecturers are suggested to Give more questions in spoken form and explanation to the students about topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs. Ask the students to do various exercises in comprehending topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs. Motivate the students to read more paragraphs related to comprehend topic and stated main idea in order to enrich their knowledge. The students are suggested to learn more about paragraphs. Especially, in comprehending topic and stated main idea. And also to do more exercises about comprehending paragraphs. The researcher suggests to the next researcher to find out the students problem in comprehending topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs. And finding the way or alternative to solve the students problem in comprehending them.
