AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENT’S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING A FREE PARAGRAPH AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the second year students’ grammatical errors in writing a free paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Descriptive design was used in this research. The number of population members was 48 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing a paragraph test. The reliability of the test was very high correlation (0.99). The result of this research showed that in general, the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University made grammatical errors in writing a free paragraph. It was proved by the finding that 44 (92%) made grammatical errors. In detail, 40 students (83%) made omission error, 18 students (37,5%) made addition error, 7 students (14,6%) made misformation error, and 5 students (10%) made misordering error. The researcher concluded that the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University had made grammatical errors in writing a free paragraph. The suggested for the lecturer to give explanations about the use of article, plural form and be. For the students, they must to study the use of article, plural form and be. For other researchers find other relevant aspect of grammatical error in writing.
